What this is

What does Strategy Lab Collective actually do?

We help organizations identify the conditions shaping what their communication can actually sustain — before recommending strategies, campaigns, or messaging.

Our work examines how resources, practices, identity, and organizational structure influence communication over time.

The goal is not simply better messaging. It's stronger communication infrastructure for long-term impact.

Isn't communication just messaging?

Messaging is one expression of communication, but it is not communication itself.

Communication is infrastructure. It lives inside decision-making, authority, workflows, staffing, relationships, and organizational identity. Messaging is what becomes visible after those systems have already shaped what can be said, by whom, and with what consistency.

What do you mean by communication infrastructure?

Communication infrastructure is the collection of resources, practices, and organizational arrangements that allow an organization to communicate consistently, clearly, and sustainably.

It includes things like decision-making authority, staffing, approval processes, internal information flow, institutional memory, audience relationships, and communication ownership across the organization.

How is this different from a communications consultancy?

Most communications consultancies help organizations communicate more effectively. Strategy Lab Collective begins one step earlier.

Rather than starting with messaging, campaigns, content calendars, or brand positioning, we identify where strain is concentrated, what structures are producing it, and what communication can realistically be sustained under current conditions.

How the work moves

Why start with a diagnostic?

Most communication problems surface downstream but originate upstream. A diagnostic identifies where strain is actually concentrated before time and resources are spent treating symptoms.

What is a Conditions Diagnostic?

The Conditions Diagnostic identifies the pressures shaping communication inside Black-led and community-rooted organizations. It names where strain is concentrated across Resources, Practices, and Identity.

What is a Postures Diagnostic?

The Postures Diagnostic examines how white-led organizations benefit from, respond to, or reproduce inequitable communication conditions. It identifies where stated commitments and organizational structure diverge.

What happens after a diagnostic?

Three moves: Diagnose. Clarify. Workshop.

The diagnostic identifies the conditions. Clarification names what those conditions are producing. Workshop turns those findings into communication infrastructure your organization can sustain and own.

Is this for us?

Who is this work for?

We focus on Black-led and community-rooted organizations, the white-led organizations accountable to them, and the funders whose decisions shape communication conditions across the field.

Do you only work with Black-led organizations?

No. The ecosystem includes more than one seat. We work with Black-led and community-rooted organizations, white-led partner organizations, and funders — each through a different diagnostic lens.

Why it matters

Why do you talk about funding and philanthropy?

Because communication conditions do not emerge randomly. Funding decisions influence staffing, authority, visibility, reporting requirements, and what organizations can realistically sustain. Communication infrastructure is shaped by how resources move through the field.

What do you mean communication problems have a history?

Communication breakdowns rarely begin where they appear. They emerge from decisions, structures, incentives, and conditions that accumulate over time. Understanding that history is often the first step toward structural repair.

Still have a question we didn't say out loud? The best answer is usually a conversation.
